Last week on his show Bill O’Reilly asked, “Why has southern New York turned into the tundra?” and then said he had a call into me. I appreciate the question.
As it turns out, the scientific community has been addressing this particular question for some time now and they say that increased heavy snowfalls are completely consistent with what they have been predicting as a consequence of man-made global warming:
“In fact, scientists have been warning for at least two decades that global warming could make snowstorms more severe. Snow has two simple ingredients: cold and moisture. Warmer air collects moisture like a sponge until it hits a patch of cold air. When temperatures dip below freezing, a lot of moisture creates a lot of snow.”
“A rise in global temperature can create all sorts of havoc, ranging from hotter dry spells to colder winters, along with increasingly violent storms, flooding, forest fires and loss of endangered species.”

Mediterranean Sea Level Could Rise By Over Two Feet, Global Models Predict

ScienceDaily (Mar. 4, 2009) — A Spanish-British research project has come up with three future scenarios for the effects of climate change on the Mediterranean over the next 90 years, using global models from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The conclusions show that ocean temperatures in this area will increase, along with sea levels.

In order to understand and correctly predict risks for the Mediterranean coast, researchers from the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA, a joint centre run by the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) and the National Oceanography Centre of Southampton in the United Kingdom have analysed simulations based on three scenarios related to climate change and the rise in greenhouse gases. Their goal was to predict the temperature, sea level and salinity of the Mediterranean in the 21st Century.

"The most positive scenario assumes that greenhouse gas concentrations remain constant at their levels in the year 2000, and even in this case climate change still has an impact. The most negative scenario is based on diverse levels of economic development all over the world, with an ongoing increase in greenhouse gas production throughout the 21st Century," Marta Marcos, the study's lead author and a researcher at the UIB, tells SINC.

The study, which has been published recently in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Oceans, shows what could happen in the Mediterranean. The models predict that higher concentrations of gases will lead to an increase in temperatures throughout the entire sea.

In the most positive scenario, the changes are least, with temperature increases of less than 1ºC expected to be recorded in the Mediterranean by the end of the 21st Century. The other two scenarios envision an increase in greenhouse gases over coming decades, and foresee an increase in the temperature of the sea of up to 2.5º C. In addition, the results show that the temperature increase will accelerate during the 21st Century.

In the long term, sea levels could alter due to changes in temperature (warming leads to an increase in volume) as well as additional mass. "The level of the whole Mediterranean will rise by between 3cm and 61cm* on average as a result of the effects of warming," says Marcos.

There is "greater uncertainty" in terms of the mass likely to be added as a result of melting ice at the poles and from continental glaciers, and this aspect is not incorporated in the study. The most important area in terms of understanding sea level rise is the coasts, "but it is here that we know least because of the low spatial resolution of the models" the expert adds.

In search of greater clarity

The conclusions of this study are not based on observations, but rather on global climate models that include a whole range of possible future socio-economic scenarios in order to predict what is likely to happen in the Mediterranean. According to the scientists, climatic conditions are going to change greatly, and for this reason it is impossible to make a completely precise prediction of what the future really holds.

In these circumstances, Marta Marcos and Michael Tsimplis say that, aside from temperature changes, the models show that the Mediterranean will also become saltier over the coming century. However, this prediction is also very uncertain because "the variations in salinity in the Mediterranean are controlled by the exchange of water through the Straits of Gibraltar, and this has not been incorporated as an indicator, meaning the related results are not very reliable".

This is due to the fact that IPCC models have very low spatial resolution, which means they can show global processes "reasonably well", but not always regional ones. In particular, the 14km-wide Straits of Gibraltar, which are of key importance in the processes of water exchange between the Mediterranean and Atlantic, are not well reproduced in the models.

The global models are of no use in estimating the impact of sea level rise in coastal areas, because of the high level of regional variability for this factor. The solution would be to use high-resolution, regional climate models to show the Mediterranean straits with greater clarity, as well as the oceanic processes that take place within the ocean's basin and coastal areas.

This is a strategy currently being pursued by European research groups working to predict the effects of climate change at a regional level, and it is expected that the level of uncertainty in predictions will be reduced over the short term. In Spain, IMEDEA is working to produce data on ocean levels in collaboration with the Spanish Port System. Without such resolution in the models "we cannot be sure of the scale of the changes", the researcher concludes.

8.1 SISTEMA DE EVALUACIÓN.

A lo largo del curso académico se realizarán pruebas de evaluación presenciales, y la información sobre las fechas la facilitará cada Centro de Gestión en los tablones de anuncios del centro.

Al finalizar cada uno de los módulos habrá una prueba de evaluación. Tendrán lugar en los Centros de Gestión y en Centros de Docencia autorizados para impartir el Programa, en función de la disponibilidad de espacios y recursos, y serán llevadas a cabo por el profesorado del mismo.

Para poder presentarse al examen de un módulo es necesario tener aprobado el módulo anterior.Para ello en cada convocatoria de exámenes existirá una recuperación de los módulos anteriores.

El alumnado deberá presentarse a examen con el tutor/a que le haya sido asignado por el Centro de Gestión.

'TUTORÍA PRESENCIAL COLECTIVA

Cada uno de los elementos que componen el curso tiene una función primordial: los programas de TV, presentación del material lingüístico y desarrollo de la destreza de comprensión auditiva; el libro, explicación y práctica de lo aprendido, así como desarrollo de las destrezas de lectura y escritura; el CD de audio, CD-ROM, DVD, desarrollo de la comprensión auditiva; el cuaderno de actividades, complementa y facilita la práctica de los diferentes aspectos del curso. Quedaba sin desarrollar, por tanto, la expresión oral.
Es evidente que el aprendizaje de un idioma moderno no se puede concebir sin la práctica oral y, con este fin, dispones, una hora a la semana y dentro del horario que se te asigne, de la ayuda de tu tutor/a en el centro al que pertenezcas.
La tutoría se dedicará principalmente a la práctica oral ya que, al ser éste un curso a distancia, es probable que carezcas de oportunidades para hablar inglés. La práctica oral te ayudará a consolidar los conocimientos nuevos y a retenerlos, a comprobar la pronunciación, a adquirir poco a poco más fluidez y a perder ese miedo que se tiene a la hora de hablar un idioma extranjero.
Como puedes comprobar, la tutoría tiene una gran utilidad. Por lo tanto, es necesario que, si te surgen dudas en el estudio de cada unidad, las resuelvas preferentemente antes de asistir a la tutoría, para así poder dedicar estas sesiones a la práctica oral. En cualquier caso, tu tutor/a te orientará en las técnicas y estrategias que faciliten el proceso de aprendizaje del idioma inglés, anticipándose a las posibles dificultades que se te puedan presentar.
En el libro encontrarás algunos ejercicios abiertos, cuya solución no aparece en la clave de respuestas, que se centran principalmente en la práctica oral y pueden ser la base de actividades que se realicen en la tutoría. Así mismo, encontrarás ejercicios abiertos para desarrollar la práctica escrita, que te aconsejamos realizar y entregar a tu tutor telemático para que te oriente sobre cómo escribir en inglés.
La asistencia a la tutoría, aunque no es obligatoria formalmente, es de gran importancia para que consigas los objetivos del curso y es una magnífica oportunidad para conocer a tus compañeros y compañeras. Debes, por tanto, hacer todo lo que puedas para asistir regularmente a dichas sesiones de tutoría.'

También es aconsejable que si decides asistir a la sesión de tutoría, hayas preparado a ser posible, los ejercicios que están señalados en el libro precisamente para dicha sesión, porque de otra manera podrías no sacarle todo el partido que se le podría sacar a estas sesiones.

Television is an important form of communication and has been for many years. Television brings important historical events, both positive and negative, directly into our homes. People don’t just read about current events, they experience them in real time.
Television can also be a fine teaching tool – there are many television shows on the air that are informative and educational. The right television shows can teach our children about morals and values as well as right from wrong. Educational television is not only for children however; Public television as well as cable television channels such as National Geographic and The History Channel serve as learning tools for adults. In fact many colleges and universities use local channels to provide distance learners the opportunity to attend lectures given on television.
Along with the advantages listed above there are also disadvantages to television. First the same proliferation of new channels that provides additional educational opportunities also provides opportunities for children to be exposed to more inappropriate content than ever before. It is not uncommon for children to have access to movies and programs intended to be viewed only by mature audiences. While technology has been put into place to help conscientious parents censor the channels and shows their children can access, these methods are far from fool proof and they are only as effective as the parents who choose whether or not to utilize them. This unfettered access to adult material appears to manifest itself in a variety of different ways but most people would agree today’s children are more aware of adult themes (such as sex and violence) at an earlier age than ever before.

Idioms and Expressions: "Politically Correctness"
“Politically correctness” is a term used for language that we use that is least likely to cause “offense,” or cause other people to be angry with you. We talk about being politically correct or “PC” most often when we are talking about racial or cultural groups in the U.S., but it can be used with any group. Most people see being PC as a way to give groups respect so that groups can get along with each other. Others believe that Americans try to be too PC and that they are too careful about giving offense. There has been some “backlash,” or strong negative reaction in the opposite direction. There is even a political talk show on American television called, “Politically Incorrect.”

Below are the politically correct or generally accepted terms for some of the major racial and cultural groups in the U.S. What is acceptable has changed over time. Terms acceptable 20 or 50 years ago are now no longer considered appropriate, and some of those are listed in the right-hand column below. We do not include “racial slurs,” or bad names used to insult a specific racial or cultural group. We also do not have the space to include smaller ethnic groups, such as Mexican American, Korean American, or Nigerian American.

Para el curso 2010/11 se han actualizado las pruebas de los módulos del programa con objeto de adecuarlas al marco establecido para las enseñanzas de idiomas de régimen especial. La evaluación de cada uno de los módulos del programa consta de una parte escrita y otra oral:

PARTE ESCRITA:

TEST DE CONTENIDOS (excepto en el Módulo 9)
PRUEBA DE COMPRENSIÓN LECTORA (READING)
PRUEBA DE COMPRENSIÓN AUDITIVA (LISTENING)
PRUEBA DE EXPRESIÓN E INTERACCIÓN ESCRITA (WRITING)

PARTE ORAL:

PRUEBA DE EXPRESIÓN E INTERACCIÓN ORAL (SPEAKING)
Una vez superada la parte escrita se tendrá acceso a la PRUEBA DE EXPRESIÓN ORAL...
La prueba oral será obligatoria, sin excepción, para todo el alumnado que supere la parte escrita del módulo 9.

'TUTORÍA PRESENCIAL COLECTIVA

Cada uno de los elementos que componen el curso tiene una función primordial: los programas de TV, presentación del material lingüístico y desarrollo de la destreza de comprensión auditiva; el libro, explicación y práctica de lo aprendido, así como desarrollo de las destrezas de lectura y escritura; el CD de audio, CD-ROM, DVD, desarrollo de la comprensión auditiva; el cuaderno de actividades, complementa y facilita la práctica de los diferentes aspectos del curso. Quedaba sin desarrollar, por tanto, la expresión oral.
Es evidente que el aprendizaje de un idioma moderno no se puede concebir sin la práctica oral y, con este fin, dispones, una hora a la semana y dentro del horario que se te asigne, de la ayuda de tu tutor/a en el centro al que pertenezcas.
La tutoría se dedicará principalmente a la práctica oral ya que, al ser éste un curso a distancia, es probable que carezcas de oportunidades para hablar inglés. La práctica oral te ayudará a consolidar los conocimientos nuevos y a retenerlos, a comprobar la pronunciación, a adquirir poco a poco más fluidez y a perder ese miedo que se tiene a la hora de hablar un idioma extranjero.
Como puedes comprobar, la tutoría tiene una gran utilidad. Por lo tanto, es necesario que, si te surgen dudas en el estudio de cada unidad, las resuelvas preferentemente antes de asistir a la tutoría, para así poder dedicar estas sesiones a la práctica oral. En cualquier caso, tu tutor/a te orientará en las técnicas y estrategias que faciliten el proceso de aprendizaje del idioma inglés, anticipándose a las posibles dificultades que se te puedan presentar.
En el libro encontrarás algunos ejercicios abiertos, cuya solución no aparece en la clave de respuestas, que se centran principalmente en la práctica oral y pueden ser la base de actividades que se realicen en la tutoría. Así mismo, encontrarás ejercicios abiertos para desarrollar la práctica escrita, que te aconsejamos realizar y entregar a tu tutor telemático para que te oriente sobre cómo escribir en inglés.
La asistencia a la tutoría, aunque no es obligatoria formalmente, es de gran importancia para que consigas los objetivos del curso y es una magnífica oportunidad para conocer a tus compañeros y compañeras. Debes, por tanto, hacer todo lo que puedas para asistir regularmente a dichas sesiones de tutoría.'
