POLITICAL CORRECTNESS - Module 8 Unit 7

Idioms and Expressions: "Politically Correctness"
“Politically correctness” is a term used for language that we use that is least likely to cause “offense,” or cause other people to be angry with you. We talk about being politically correct or “PC” most often when we are talking about racial or cultural groups in the U.S., but it can be used with any group. Most people see being PC as a way to give groups respect so that groups can get along with each other. Others believe that Americans try to be too PC and that they are too careful about giving offense. There has been some “backlash,” or strong negative reaction in the opposite direction. There is even a political talk show on American television called, “Politically Incorrect.”

Below are the politically correct or generally accepted terms for some of the major racial and cultural groups in the U.S. What is acceptable has changed over time. Terms acceptable 20 or 50 years ago are now no longer considered appropriate, and some of those are listed in the right-hand column below. We do not include “racial slurs,” or bad names used to insult a specific racial or cultural group. We also do not have the space to include smaller ethnic groups, such as Mexican American, Korean American, or Nigerian American.

Generally Acceptable:

•Native American
•American Indian
•African American
•Black
•Latino (men) / Latina (women)
•Hispanic
•Asian American
•White (American)
•Caucasian (American)
•European American

Less Acceptable or Not Acceptable:

•Indian
•Afro-American
•Negro
•Colored
•Spanish (unless from Spain)
•Oriental

Obama comment sexist? I call it a compliment

(05/04/2013)
These were the president's exact words, according to a White House transcript from the fundraiser:
"You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you'd want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake. She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country — Kamala Harris is here. (Applause.) It's true. Come on. (Laughter.) And she is a great friend and has just been a great supporter for many, many years."

The Great American Melting Pot

The history of everyone coming to America in the 1800s and 1900s, pouring past the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor through Ellis Island!

My grandmother came from Russia
A satchel on her knee,
My grandfather had his father's cap
He brought from Italy.
They'd heard about a country
Where life might let them win,
They paid the fare to America
And there they melted in.

Lovely Lady Liberty
With her book of recipes
And the finest one she's got
Is the great American melting pot.
The great American melting pot.

America was founded by the English,
But also by the Germans, Dutch, and French.
The principle still sticks;
Our heritage is mixed.
So any kid could be the president.

You simply melt right in,
It doesn't matter what your skin.
It doesn't matter where you're from,
Or your religion, you jump right in
To the great American melting pot.
The great American melting pot.
Ooh, what a stew, red, white, and blue.

America was the New World
And Europe was the Old.
America was the land of hope,
Or so the legend told.
On steamboats by the millions,
In search of honest pay,
Those 19th-century immigrants sailed
To reach the U.S.A.

Lovely Lady Liberty
With her book of recipes
And the finest one she's got
Is the great American melting pot
The great American melting pot.
What good ingredients,
Liberty and immigrants.

They brought the country's customs,
Their language and their ways.
They filled the factories, tilled the soil,
Helped build the U.S.A.
Go on and ask your grandma,
Hear what she has to tell
How great to be an American
And something else as well.

Lovely Lady Liberty
With her book of recipes
And the finest one she's got
Is the great American melting pot
The great American melting pot.

The great American melting pot.
The great American melting pot.

The Multi-Cultural History of the United States

Racially Divided States of America

For several decades now, an unprecedented attack on white culture has been occurring, changing America's civilization to something that has differed markedly from what was envisioned by its Founding Fathers.
But what, exactly, did America's Forefathers believe, and how does America's multicultural experiment differ from America's founding principles?
In this video, you will go on a politically incorrect journey through time, learning the whole truth of what America's former leaders believed. From George Washington to Abraham Lincoln to Harry Truman, you will discover the lessons we have been taught in today's history books are far from the truth.
More importantly, you will see what occurred to other civilizations in more recent times that embraced the multicultural experiment that is being praised throughout the land, and how it ultimately caused the end of civilization as we know it in other countries.

Australia have scrapped this advert for KFC amid accusations of racial insensitivity. There were complaints from the U.S. that the film plays on what they see as a negative racial stereotype – linking black people with a love of fried chicken. Even though the commercial features West Indies cricket fans.

KFC have apologised, saying the commercial was meant to be “light-hearted” and any offence was “unintended”.
